Sail Drive Manufacturers

Most marine diesels are derived from either the motor vehicle or industrial areas but who makes the sail drives. I read some where that ZF makes the Nannies but there is no mention of sail drives on ZF's web site and no response to email.
I ask because I am thinking of useing an engine that is not supplied in any of the packaged units. Are they obtainable other than as spare parts?

There really are only two of note. Volvo and Kanzaki/Yanmar. The units are available without engines. They will have an SAE bellhousing patern.

Do you know who makes the Nanni units, Volvo ?, They only have a single rubber seal.

Sounds like a Volvo. Yanmar uses a two layer seal.

OK for those that have the experience which is the most reliable.
From other threads here and elsewhere I am of the understanding that the Volvo might be the better leg. Reasons:-
It seems the volvo rubber bootie has a far greater time to replacement and a similar price.
The Yanmars oil change seems a lot more difficult and frequent.
Are my impressions correct?

It depends on the unit. How many HP are you going to be running?

Even though the stated service life of the Yanmar is shorter. I think it's a better unit. Parts are less expensive than the Volvo. Props interchange with Volvo.
Now, to get really off track. Have you looked at the Stillett drive. The do a dive leg that can be electric powered. Then you have one engine and two drives.

I have seen these but tended to dismiss them as I like the idea of the isolation of the rubber bootie. The sillette seem solid mount. I may have to see what further info they can supply as their website is rather spartan.
Do you have any experience with them, reliability etc. They do have the advantage of being available with a bronze lower unit however.
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
The only Bronze lower units out there are the Volvo IPS. All of the saildrives are Aluminum. Are you trying to build this thing to last till the cockroaches die?
I have no experience with Stillett directly.

There is a bronze option for some of the legs, 7 Kg weight penalty.
http://www.sillette.co.uk/elect_saildrives.pdf is one.

Are you trying to build this thing to last till the cockroaches die?
Hopefully longer
Actually just trying to avoid problems where poss. The bronze would lower corrosion probs.
