Repowering in Central America

Title pretty much says it all, looking for first or second hand experience. We would like to do it in Colon, Panama for its free trade zone status so we don't get nailed with huge import tax (thats the idea anyways). We have decided to go with beta in UK with the good exchange rate currently as its almost half of what it was going to cost before we left so we like to get it in sooner rather than later. Beta is willing to hold the engine until we get a good place to ship and do the install which is nice. So has anyone here done a repower in this area of the world? We are currently in Quepos, Costa Rica heading south. If we could stay longer than 3 months I would be interested in doing it here, but we only have another month on our visa, so panama is the next stop. Our current engine, more specifically our gearbox should make it through the canal, I hope, so shelter bay is in our cross hairs. Any help would be great!

There is a Yanmar dealer in Panama and that is the popular choice.

Re: Repowering in Central America

Re import tax & NAFTA,if that is the import tax to USA? you mentioned:

The principle of NAFTA is to reduce or eliminate)any duty on goods imported from one NAFTA nation to another NAFTA nation on goods produced in a NAFTA nation.
Technically, this would mean no NAFTA reduction on goods mfgrd in a non-NAFTA nation-eg: Japan,China, etc
Best you check with your home country re NAFTA reduction for the particular model engine/trans that you are looking at.
My personal experience & humble opinions-feel free to ignore both
