Repowering a Tartan 3000

I have a 1982 tartan 3000 with a fresh (salt ) water cooled Universal 5411 engine. The head is cracked and in need of replacement. Do I rebuild or replace? I am considering repowering the Boat. Cost is a problem right now as I am unemployed. I have been looking around at used engines. I am looking for good replacement options?

Can you re-build yourself? If not, can you re-place yourself? to have a pro re-build will cost as much as replacing with new yourself.

No. I am not that handy but don't mind getting dirty. I pulled the exhaust manifold on the old engine, tested for leaks and replaced the gaskets. The large amounts of scale indicate age and deterioation

Call your local Kubota Dealer and price a head.

Either bare or with valves.

Universal diesels are Kubota tractor engines. You just need to know the Kubota model number that is stamped on the dipstick. The following are Universal Marine/ Kubota tractor diesel designations:
M15/5411 Z-500
M18 Z-600
M25 D-850
M25XP D-950
M3-20 D640
M30 D-1101
Kubota parts online: http://www.tractorsmart.com the 25XP is a "B" series tractor engine.

Chief, do you mean Featherman Enterprises? He's in PA. He was a good source for Universal parts but his website has been MIA for some time now. Not sure if he is still operating or not. Anyone?

Will I be needing the serial # off the engine to get the right head?
I called Don Moyer in Pensylvania but they only deal in Universal gas engines.
In addition to a new head I will be needing a new piston ring set and connecting roads as well as a head gasket.

Gord...Need Help 5411/z500
I am trying to locate a parts cross reference for a Universal 5411/Kubota Z500.

Specifically I need the exhaust manifold gasket and "freeze plugs"

I don't trust the company (rhymes with morrison) their pictures don't jive.

The two Kubota dealers near me say they can't look up parts for a Z-500 engine.....I think it is laziness on their part....Jaysus it is a two cylinder engine used on B1500 tractors....how much more info do they need?

Universal diesels being marinized Kubota tractor engines, your Dealer should just require the Kubota model number, that’s stamped on the dipstick.

The Universal M15/5411 is the Kubota Z-500 as used in the B5100 Tractor (NOT B1500)

M18 = Z-600
M25 = D-850
M25XP = D-950
M3-20 = D640
M30 = D-1101

Thanks for the info chief I will look for a a head from Kubota for the z-500 which was used on a B5100 tractor. Given the current age and condition of the engine would you rebuild or replace?

If you want Kubota engine parts, I suggest that you contact a Kubota engine dealer, not a tractor dealer. Tractor dealers are only able to help if you have the correct Kubota parts book. The reason for this is that the Kubota tractor dealer's parts books go by machine model, not engine model. Kubota engine dealers look up by engine model.

I love how the part numbers are hidden, one trick seems to be superceding an old part when people finally tumble to the Fram filter vs the "approved" OEM filter.

Chief, you wouldn't happen to know who's block they used for the Westerbeke 108C6?

The engine was blowing black smoke and possibly fuel. It was very difficult to start in the end. When I got the boat out of the water. We checked the glow plugs and it was blowing salt water out of one plug. A Compression test only showed 125 out of one and zero out of the glow plug that was blowing the water. Thats when we removed the head.
