Repowering a 1968 ericson 30 sailboat

Hi,
I'm thinking of purchasing a 1968 ericson 30 sailboat as a live-aboard boat, as well as a long-distance offshore cruiser in the future. The boat I'm looking at needs a new engine, but is in great condition otherwise. I'm wondering if anyone has advice/estimates for how much it would cost to refit this boat with a suitable diesel engine (25 hp? 20 hp?), and if it's worth the $8500 that he's asking for the boat, combined with the fact that I will have to pay for the repowering. It comes with a super cheap slip rental rate that can be transferred over to me.

Thanks for your help! I'm super new to this stuff, but excited to learn more!

Hard to say if this boat is worth it but it wiil cost quite bit more than you are paying for the boat for a new engine. So one question would be, could you do better for the 20K you are going to have in this one? Do you do all your own work? If so you might do a little better on the cost of a new engine and trans.

I new 13 HP small diesel will power this boat and have a gracious reserve of power. If you are replacing an Atomic 4, allow about $7,000 for the new engine complete with transmission and at least another $2,000 for the extras which everyone forgets about until they are committed to the job. These extras include the new propeller, fuel hose, fuel filter/water seperater, control cables, exhaust hose, muffler, etc.

Guy's comment about how much money you want in this boat is right on the money.
