Replacing clutch plates

I want (need) to replace the clutch plates (not cone) on my MS10L-A gearbox which is mounted on a Penta 2030 engine. Having rung around, I have had 3 options offered.
1. One dealer saying the safest & most viable option is to buy a new gearbox & have the warranty.
2. Another dealer who has said there is no problem fitting an overhaul kit, but with the labour to overhaul only added it comes to nearly 80% of a new box cost.
3. Another saying fitting the overhaul kit is no problem to a mechanically minded person, so I need to just purchase the kit which saves over £1k

Are these things a viable DIY fix? Do I really need a new box just because the clutch is worn?

If you don't know what you are doing, it is a scary place. You usually require special tools, but I don't know with this particular box.
