Removing Pick-Up Tube From Moeller Poly Tank

Hi Folks, awhile back I read elsewhere on a different thread I cannot now find where someone recommended removing the metal screen from the bottom of the pick-up tube on a Moeller poly fuel tank when used with diesel so that it doesn't get gunked up. I am just curious to know what I am getting into before I start.

Is there a nut molded into the poly tank that receives the pick-up tube fitting?

Also, there appears to be some kind of clear thread sealant at the fitting I don't recognize. Anyone know what that is?

I remember from the other thread someone saying Moeller offered basically no customer support.

Thanks!
