Reliability of new spare parts

There have been a few changes to the engines over the years. Including a change to the lift pumps.

It's a machine, they break. It sounds like your complaining because you want a perfect specimen to always function when desired.

Wise advice with respect to the tools. You never know what you need until you get into it. I had to fabricate a special tool from an allen wrench in order to remove our starter.

Also, painting in place is great if you have the clearance. It's difficult to get 360 degree access to most of our parts like the lift fuel pump and starter, hence our desire to uninstall components.

I discovered, at the slip, that in order to remove my Yanmars head I needed a deep, 21/2" socket, so now I carry one.

As for putting the new part on, finding out it's good, taking it off in order to paint it. Just assume it'll be good and paint it first step.
Surely you won't be wrong that often, and even if you are, send it back painted. I COULD be wrong, but I strongly doubt that most folks put a new part on in order to check it out then remove it for painting. I sure as hell wouldn't. And I'd be rather indignant if a supplier refused a warrenty return because I painted the part..I assume that's your hangup..

When you buy a spare. Put the spare on. The original part that you just replaced goes in the box the spare came out of. That way when you buy a spare you know it works, and fits. If you didn't get it this time. Hopefully someone else can explain it better?
