Reduction Gear oil seal replacement Yanmar 3gm30F

My Yanmar 3GM30F reduction gear is leaking a little oil where the shaft exits the casing. This oil is thrown out by the flange. I have new seals but I am curious if I have to totally remove the transmission and reduction gear or can I simply remove the flange and replace the seal that way? I would appreciate knowing which way to go before I get into the small, tight quarters with my bad back.

if you have enough room behind the trans to swing the required wrenches and sockets. It can be done in the boat. You'll need to be able to push your shaft back a good 6" or so. With a bad back, I'd recommend pulling the trans.
