Rebuilding the Volvo MD7A

In my continuing efforts to finish rebuilding the Cape Dory 30, I tackle the sticky inboard rebuild. In my case it's the Volvo MD7A. With parts not being made, it's a challenge finding them but in my experience but for the most part a thorough online and offline searching yielded me results.

It’s nice to have another reference for the MD7A out there. Thank for that. I don’t have one but my buddy does and we went through this a couple years ago. They are becoming extinct due to lack of parts and high prices for them, but we got his rebuilt and I had no idea it could purr so nicely! Hopefully he’ll get another 10 or 15 years out of it!

I ordered it through a local marine store and I'm not sure if they're still making it because they sent me a wrong one. I see old stock being sold online.

When I decided to rebuild the Volvo MD40A that came in my boat, the price quote I received for just the parts was over US$25,000 and that didn’t include parts to overhaul the transmission. I was able to buy a brand new engine and transmission for about two-thirds of that amount.

I did not want to waste the 140 I spent for the wrong gasket so I went ahead and asked a mechanic friend to customize it.

I'm actually looking to see if its worth converting to freshwater cooling and if the conversion kits are still being sold.
