Re: Ran engine w no oil- is it destroyed?
A Diesel engine has a lot tighter tolerances than a 51 Buick, or an air cooled 2 stroke moped.
Sure, the 4-108 can take abuse: temps, water and oil pressures, injectors not serviced, etc.
To run any Diesel engine out of lube oil however, and expect no damage or long-term effects, regardless of the engine's reputation or brand, seems hare-brained.

Thank God there is some common sense left on this board.

I didn't read seized up but maybe it is. He won't know until he tries to turn it over and start it again.

Re: Ran engine w no oil- is it destroyed?
I had a friend with a Volvo 2 cylinder who got some advice from an expert frined to pull the engine and rebuild it because it was running rough. It was probably an engine mount or a bad injector. We'll never know because he had to replace it with a Yanmar because his engine rebuilder couldn't get parts in 6 months.
My point is. Always keep trying until you know it's toast.

Re: Ran engine w no oil- is it destroyed?
Big difference between running an engine with no oil and running it til it stops by itself. If you notice the problem and shut down the engine there is a good possability that the bearings were stil wet enough to keep them from melting but that is not the same as running it til the bearings go dry then melts the bearing and stops the motor. Yes it is damaged permanently.

Best bet would be to get some oil into the cylinders before you crank and then crank with the injectors out until you have oil pressure. Then install the injectors and giver a go.

If it siezed it probably means the big end bearings burnt out. If it sounds rattly when restarted it's going to need repair.

That was exactly what I was going to chime in with. If you realized it (oil press guage, alarm, etc) and shut it off, it would be fine.
But it stopped for a reason, and that reason was friction. I'd bet bearings are little shavings in the oil pan.
I did the same thing with a '75 Vega once. Gas of course, and a terrible car. Pulled the pan, replaced the rod and main bearings, drove it another 40K miles.
It doesn't cost too much to fill the thing with oil and try it out. But I'm 90% that it's got a problem. May be just bearings (which are easy peasy if the crank isn't damaged) May be rings, liners, etc..

Not sure what planet you are from but you think those observations could easily be from somebody fearful and uninformed?

He asked, right?
Of course, it's his choice, but some just simply disagree with you.
And, to the OP, you odn't need to use the decompression lever.
Pull the stop lever and turn her over to get the oil moving. Forget that decompression lever.
Good luck.
ITWMB, that's what I would do.
YMMV.
Your boat, your choice.

Re: Ran engine w no oil- is it destroyed?
Just a post that may make you feel a little better.. We own a small engine shop and a customer brought a generator in. Brand new, they never put oil in it made 15 min before seizing. Of course, it wasn't warranty (he probably could have claimed, but he wasn't an *******). So he asked us to look at it.
Turns out it seized at the pushrod bushing. We pulled it apart, polished with emery cloth and put it back together. THAT WAS 10,000 HOURS AGO. Seriously, he got 10K hours out of her after that.
If its not seized, start it up and see how it is. You might get lucky, and at this point, you have nothing to loose!

Don't know if this is useful in the present circumstance vs how it's usually used on engines that have sat for a while, but couldn't hurt really.

You can do this technique without compression release just hold the stop button while cranking. Damage was definitely done but to what extent a compression test will tell you the damage to the cylinders I don't know how you can judge the damage to the bearings

Therein lies the problem.
The OP said "quit" running. Could be seized or not. But in any case, not much to lose by putting oil in the thing and hoping for the best.
Also, why did it lose oil?

Subjectively
Sound, oil pressure (especially when hot), oil analysis after sufficent hours.

It lost the oil because the pressure tube to the oil gauge came out of its compression fitting.
I'm on the project today, so we will see what happens. Thank you all for your advice!

Re: Ran engine w no oil- is it destroyed?
Would a Slick 50 treatment have helped, as they claim, in a diesel?
Also, how hot did it get? Raw water cooled?
