Re: racor 500 filter what micron filter?

Yanmar specs 30 micron for most of its engines on the claim that finer filters can damage the fuel pump. Many people, including me, ignore this but if your engine is a Yanmar and is under warranty you might want to stick with their spec.

Jees! It would be nice, to have all that room, to mount all that stuff and still be able to see it from a distance.

FYI- The screw on filters for the 3JH/4JH's are 5 µm from the dealer.

WOW. In my business, we call 30 micron filters "rock catchers".

If the filter area is large enough and the element is lightly loaded, finer is OK in my opinion. If there are worries, call Yanmar and ask. they should be able to OK a finer element and specify the max vacuum to protect the pump. The other thing you can do is install a pollishing loop of higher flow through a fine filter to cycle diesel from tank to pump to filter to tank. the engine is not involved but over time, the fuel in the tank(s) will become very clean. We have all seen these systems marketed but you can easily make your own.

Re: racor 500 filter what micron filter?

Sorry. I should have said that 30 micron spec from Yanmar is for the primary filter. The secondary filter on the engine is finer. I believe 5 or 10 micron depending on the engine.

CarlF, in all the threads we have had on the forum I had never heard that before. Do you have a reference to the Yanmar edict against anything less than a 30 micron filter?

Re: racor 500 filter what micron filter?

FYI- I have personally sent an email to Yanmar, and did receive a reply stating and in reference to the screw-on filter # 129470-55703, which are for the 3JH & 4JH motors;

Thank you for contacting Yanmar.

The micron size is 5. After researching this with my Parts dept. it appears that this is the lowest micron filter available from Yanmar.

Thank you and have a great day
