Question about Lubrication Oil

Hi all,

Been looking at the price of lubricating oil for my Volvo Penta TMD 22.
In the UK, the Volvo Penta own brand oil retails at about £5 per litre excluding tax.
I found another product made by Shell, Shell Sirius 15W-40, retails at £3 per litre (ex. tax)
The spec on the Volvo Oil is
VDS-2, API CG-4, ACEA E3

The Shell oil spec is
API CH-4
ACEA E3, E5
and is approved against:
Volvo VDS 2

The data sheet for the shell oil states it is suitabel for high speed marine diesels (>1200rpm).
The engine idles at about 1000, and underway usually at about 2000 rpm.
Any experts out there who could advise if the Shell oil is a suitable replacement. It appears to have a higher spec than the Volvo oil

The Shell oil should be fine as it conforms to the Volvo spec.
Volvo dont make their own oil. This oil will be made for them by one of the better known oil companies and packaged as part of their marketing.
You and I have no way of knowing if the Volvo oil is made by Shell or Total or BP or????.

Have fun, Stanley

The Shell oil will be fine. The Shell meets the specs for your engine. I also know what Volvo charges.

Shell Rotella T 15-40 (not familiar with Sirius) is some of the finest oil made for diesel engines. As stated above, Volvo doesn't make their own oil.

Thanks all for taking the time to reply, has put my mind at ease, I was pretty sure that the shell oil would be OK. Was fully aware thatr Volvo dont make oil, just sticj there brand name on the container and hike up the price.

Cant seem to find a supplier for this in the UK, but the Sirius is stated as being specifically for marine diesels and I have found a supplier
