Prop for Watkins 27 with 12hp yanmar

I recently purchased a Watkins 27 with a 12 hp yanmar. It has a sailing prop which is insufficient for backing up into my slip. There's a strong cross current. Can anyone tell me the correct diameter and pitch for a standard prop for this boat and engine combination?Thank you, I'll be looking forward to your reply

Re: Prop for Watkins 27 with 12hp yanmar

I just got the boat. The previous owner had the Yanmar rebuilt professionally; it has less than 20 hrs on it. The paint has not even worn off of the v-belt pulleys. It is a 2 cyl Yanmar with fresh water cooling with a 2 blade sailing prop. Currently the boat will barely attain 5 knots with the engine maxed out at 3100 rpm. Not being familiar with small diesel aux engines, what should this engine max out at?
I cannot find any data plate on the engine. The previous owner thinks that the engine is 16-18 hp?? All I could find was a number stamped on the fwd/port side of the block "10190."
Do you know where the data plate is usually located?
I'm going to have to replace the prop and it would sure help to get some recommendations from someone with the same boat, engine combo.
thanks,

Re: Prop for Watkins 27 with 12hp yanmar

I was going to suggest repitching the prop an inch to help increase your speed but, on sober second thought, I think what you have is almost perfect, in the sense that, there isn't anymore to be gained.
Generally that engine should be at 75% power at 2800 rpm. The sweet spot. One inch more would make the max rpm around 2900, and a 1/2 a knot more.
Now if you have a few bucks, my shipwright has an underpowered sloop. After many props he swears by, not at, Autoprop.

Re: Prop for Watkins 27 with 12hp yanmar

My search "suggests" you have a SVE/SB12 with a 2:1 transmission.
The normal prop is 13X9 , 2 bladed, or 12X9, 3 bladed. RH with a 1" shaft.
Some people have used a 13X10, 2 bladed.
A better prop might be a Campbell Prop, 3 bladed, for a little extra umph in those currents. But accept the top speed that you get. Campbell is accepted as being superior and is a fixed prop.

Thank you for the information. It seems the pitch is about right but do you think a three bladed prop would give me more low-end power to maneuver in strong currentsThe operating range information was very helpful

Yes. Adding a blade, gives more power at lower RPMs, in forward and reverse.

ThanksHopefully I can find a pitch stamp on the prop tomorrow. It's still in the water. Then I'll try and find a prop to work.

Re: Prop for Watkins 27 with 12hp yanmar

My problems have been cured. The previous owner obviously
Had no idea what prop was on the boat. We cleaned the bottom and the barnacle cluster off the prop. It's a 3 bladed cupped 13" prop with adjustable pitch. The boat now turns 3300 wot and makes about 6 knots at 3100. Under sail in a moderate breeze we made about the same speed.
Thanks for all of your help.

Re: Prop for Watkins 27 with 12hp yanmar

In general 3 bladed are far better than 2 bladed in reverse. Personally I wouldn't go down in diameter if going to a 3 blade though. It sounds like you are currently close to where you want to be rpm wise. A prop shop should be able to get you the correct 3 blade pitch if you give them what you have and know.
The hull speed on your Watkins is only about 5.5 so keep that in mind, you are not too far off..

Re: Prop for Watkins 27 with 12hp yanmar

My Watkins is a 1982 27' open cockpit, shoal draft.
She's named Quadrille and has been around a lot, all up and down the East Coast from Massachusetts to South Fla. The bottom could still use some work as it's just been scraped (needs to be pulled, sanded, and painted) but we've seen 6.5 kts (GPS) quite a few times in moderate winds(~10-12 knts). And this wasn't with the tide.
So, she's already exceeding her hull speed and I hope to get at least 1.5-2 knots more out of her with a clean bottom.
I'll keep you all posted.

The reason I asked was about a month ago I had recieved an email in response to my posting on Craigslist looking for an 81-83 Watkins 27. The guy described his boat as having a "YAMMER" diesel engine..and named "Quadrille". Thinking it was some sort of scam, I emailed him back and said I was very interested....well the next morning I got a reply that the boat had been sold that day. Still wasnt too sure if it was a scam or not... I emailed him again and he never replied.

I guess youre the guy who bought his boat that morning!

Yes, I was the guy who traded a 50' houseboat for the Watkins. Out of curiosity, how much was he asking?

Re: Prop for Watkins 27 with 12hp yanmar

We never got far enough to talk price... I just thought it strange that one day he's offering the boat for sale to me and the next morning its gone.

Ive been looking for one now for a couple of years... they are getting scarce in Florida..

I missed a nice one in Pensacola a few months ago.. I just couldnt get up there fast enough. If you hear of one for sale, let me know.
