The VP D2-40 engine
is based on the Perkins/ISM 404-15 series industrial engine
. Early models of the D2-40 were based on the 404c series, and then changed to the 404d when Perkins
replaced the c with the d. Major differences are in the combustion chamber design and the governor, changes Perkins
made to meet emission requirements in the US and Europe
. Visually the front of the governor case above the sea water
pump is flat on the C version and rounded on the D version, plus the C version has oil
fill on the valve cover only, and the D has oil
fill on both the valve cover and the timing case.
All the marineization is designed by VP and built/ installed in the UK Perkins factory. Electrical
systems are Volvo
spec except for the glow plugs and starter.
