Re: Please help me identify my boat engines

Aloha Zinco,

I can't see them very well in their smallish photo and with my very senior eyes but red is usually Westerbeke. Maybe a larger photo would help others identify them.

Gas or diesel?
Your picture is too small too say anything other than red.
The green thing could be the generator?

Re: Please Help me Identify my Boat Engines

You need a bigger picture.

That color red is usually Westerbeke, especially if the hoses and belts and everything else were painted the same red as the engine itself. WB is unique because they paint the completed engine after it has all been assembled, including all the rubber parts that aren't supposed to be painted.

Our old Universal (pre-Westerbeke) and our current Volvos were painted the same way - so it isn't unique!

Re: Please Help me Identify my Boat Engines

Good lord, those are automobile engines from the 1960's! In cars, they gave about 20mpg, so not very fuel efficient.

Re: Please Help me Identify my Boat Engines

You got 20 mpg ? Luxury !

My 1969 Chevvy gave 7 mpg when fully loaded. It was one of those models with genuine, original plastic wood panels down the doors.

Re: Please Help me Identify my Boat Engines

Fuel economy is going to depend on your boat hull shape and condition, props, etc. The only real way to determine it is to go out and burn some fuel at normal cruising speeds.

If you are looking for a gas-sipper, I don't think those two are it…

I forgot to mention that sometimes former owners paint their engines whatever color they have left over in a rattle can.

Re: Please Help me Identify my Boat Engines

From here, the larger later Volvo picture looks more orange, as compared to Westerbleak Red.

And more obviously, painted before finally assembly, rather than slathered with red paint after all the parts were bolted on.
