Pink Stuff

My Yanmar 2GM20F 2 cyl,('87 Tartan) every so often, drops a teaspoon or 2 of pink fluid into the tray under the engine, toward bow end of motor. Is this transmission fluid? What do I check 1st?

Re: Pink Stuff

Put your fingers in it. Smell them. If it smells like diesel, it's not ATF.

Thinking about this a moment, if your boat doesn't smell like diesel, it's probably ATF.

Is the color similar to the color of the coolant in the reservoir somewhere above the engine?

Re: Pink Stuff

yannies take 30 wt oil, as i recall.. but can use dextran. that is pink.
if your engine is raw water cooled it is not coolant, but if you have a fresh water cooled engine, you are prolly leaking coolant, which is also pink, magenta or orange. not green like a car.

Hmmm... Zee, our engine coolant is indeed fluorescent green, not pink.

But it should be easy to tell the difference between an aqueous solution like coolant and a hydrocarbon oil like ATF. Just rubbing between the fingers should be an adequate test.

Re: Pink Stuff

Diesel around here (NE) often has pink dye in it.

Smell it and you will know... sounds like diesel to me.

Re: Pink Stuff

My guess would be antifreeze. I use the Prestone heavy duty stuff which is red. If you have wet cylinder sleeves, that is the proper antifreeze to use rather than the green Prestone antifreeze. They don't mix.

Thanks everyone. I'll get back in there today for a touch and smell.
