re: Petrol to BMW diesel

Also, the turbo is mounted on top of the manifold on the 525tds e34 bmws if I remember correctly. Possibly easier to find parts for the M51 than the older M21?

re: Petrol to BMW diesel

My engine came out of an E34 and the turbo was mounted downwards. The airfilterbox is on top of the turbo, along the valve cover, so no room for a turbo there.

As for the sump: I already looked into the RR sump, but the only used ones I can find are almost as expensive as an complete engine!!
I will check for a 325 tds sump, thanks for the tip!

And thanks for the welcome, Gordmay!

Yes, I have tried that, but the turbo was hitting the valve cover. The exhaust manifold of a 524TD has some "offset"' of the turbo flange. That way the everything fits well.

And thanks to the previous reply I have found a used sump of a 325 tds. Much cheaper than the RR version.

I will have to check that then. The engine I've just got came from an M reg e34 (or so i was told!) and thats mounted ontop.

Hi,update for you, have ordered ordered two of the marinised units and they will be with me end of next week.
Had VP bell housing refurbed as well as two 289 drives by another company IVSS marine in kent UK. Very good prices came recommended.
Will update with pics when I have them.

re: Petrol to BMW diesel

I was wondering how you were getting on, and decided to check back. Looks interesting! Have you any more photos?

Unfortunately I ran out of time and money! Boat was costing too much in the yard, so the old engines have gone back in.

I have still got both M51 engines, so I may look at converting them this time next year... who knows.
