Perkins, replace water tube with hose?

Just wondering if any of you Perkins 4-107 or 4-108 owners have replaced the long water tube, that runs from the heat exchanger at the real of the motor, to the front of the exhaust manifold.? It's about 2' long with a 90 deg. bend at 1 end and a 180 deg. bend at the other. About 1 1/4" diameter.

I don't have access to my parts book or serial number, so I can't call a dealer for a price. I was wondering if anyone has just replaced it with a long hose? Can't see what the problem would be, but who knows.

Has anyone done this?

Thanks

Mine is a hose with both an oil cooler and a trans cooler in line. It then snakes up and connects to the exhaust elbow. Works great for my 4-107.

I'm really considering this on my 4.236 as well, my main reason may be different then yours however. On min the diameter of the tube is a different diameter then the engine connection, originally you uses a special hose from perkins, which they no longer sell, so no I have to force a smaller section of hose onto the larger of the two sections, it's a PITA, if I just replace the metal tube with hose, it would be the same size and less headache. I don't really see a disadvantage to the hose other then I guess there is a larger area to go bad or get damaged? I dunno what is the advantage of the pipe?

I replaced the tube. Used copper pipe and soldered together the bends/fittings. Works grea so far. Over 100 hrs of motoring so far with no problem. I'm thinking i used 1" pipe. But it could have been 1- 1/4"

Are there any concerns pumping hot sea water through a copper pie and corrosion? I'm only asking, cause I don't know.

I have 1" bronze pipe and fittings before the raw water pump and hose leading to the exhaust after the heat exchanger. I've seen what sea water can do to galvy fittings. I don't want to go through that again.

I have the 408 and a friend told me the other day to just replace it with copper pipe, from reading this post adding a cooler would help.

best of luck,

John
