Perkins oil leak fix

I have a 4.108 and it leaks. I will not put the rope seal in and have it leak again. I am having a seal made with a modified seal housing. I will install this seal on 18th july. If the seal does not leak I will offer it to the sailing community. This is a test but should it work it will solve a large problem with the 4.108. Here's hoping.

Thats great but it's already available for the 108. If you invent something for the 107, you got something.

Sorry can't help you. Our boat and the records are in Guatemala and we are in the US now. However the first place I called had the parts for a 108, maybe Foley or TAD.

Foley and TAD have the improved rope seal. I am going with a modern one piece rubber seal. I think it is time for someone to bring the 108 into the 20th century. I have looked at most of the seals out there and cannot find a modern seal. I will modify the seal housing and Seal Jet will supply the rubber seal. This setup is the same as modern auto engines. The EPA will not allow oily bilges anymore. I am just trying to save people money by not replacing the motor when a modern seal will do the job. I will keep everybody posted.

I'm not talking about the improved rope seal for the 107, which I think is just a bit of modern stuffing box packing. I doubt it's any better than the Perkins packing.
Sorry I can't come up with the name of who has the one piece seal kit for the 108. Hopefully your project will not cost to much or be more trouble, it's been done many times.
A properly done rope packing will last a good while so there is no need to call the EPA on Perkins owners.

Yes I have the proverbial 4-107 leak. Makes a oil slick everytime I bilge. I hope someone can come up with a solution!

I was not talking about calling the EPA! I am trying to make it simple to improve the seal on the perkins as I have one and it leaks. The original post was just to let people know that I am working on a new seal. I welcome anyone to tell me where I can get a seal for the 108. I would much rather install a seal rather then design, machine and try my on. A proven seal would be better. But in light of no name being put out there I will stay on my current course. I own a machine shop in B'ham , Al. My job is to fix problems and I have been doing this for 42 years.

I will look at the 4.107 also. I bought a seal housing from a diesel shop in Virgina and got it today. Called Seal Jet and they said they will work with me to produce a seal. Will keep all posted. Thanks.

It looks like the 108, 107 and 99 use the same rear seal housing. If anybody knows let me know please.

Well they don't. If you are going to be an expert you should know. The seal diameter on the 107 is smaller than the crank flange. That is the reason you can't use a one piece seal. The seal on a 108 is the same diameter as the crank flange, that is why you can use a one piece seal

The shaft seal fit on a 108 is 2.248. The flange is 3.999/3.997. You can find a workshop manual at bluemoment.com. The seal will be split on one side to go over the flange then captured by the housing and have .020 press in the housing. I am not an expert on perkins but I have been studying the problem for a week. I will fix mine and any others that want to seal their perkins. I still do some automotive work. The last 406 Clevor Ford I built pulled 560 hp and is in a pickup. Normally I build HiPo Chevys strickly for the street.

I have multiple .pdf Manuals (fm. 1961 through 1988) for both service and parts that I can forward You via PM or email if You'd like or if it'll assist in any way?

I also wish to sign up for 4(FOUR) of these as soon as You have the bugs worked out, or information fm. "GUY" as to the existing fix that he has as info. on his boat in Guatamala, as I have 2 4.108's now and know rebuilders who'd 'test drive' the other two and if they behave as advertised would want dozens, if not hundreds for the long term (they rebuild about a half doz. 4.108's & 4.107's a month). Anybody building better mousetraps gets my business, always!
(My current vessel, classic Pearson P39 doesn't even LEAK ...yet, but then again, Why WAIT, right?)
Awesome engine that sips fuel at 2050 rpms & moves us at hull speed (10kts) and it'll be a very cold day before I replaced w/anything else.

I will let you know how it goes. I am delayed going to the boat due to work. I think it will work due to the fact it is made like the small block chevy seal and they do not leak for 200,000 miles. Will let you know as soon as possible.
