Perkins engine

I have a 6.354 engine with a CAV DAP rotary fuel injection pump. It has developed a small leak at the fitting where the fuel line goes into the pump. It is very difficult to get a wrench on the nut to tighten. I am afraid to over tighten in case it would deform the "olive" that I think maybe in the nut. Any suggestions on how to stop the leak?

Re: Perkins engine

A friend with the same engine had a similar leak, he replaced the copper crush washers on the banjo fitting to cure it. The bolt on a banjo fitting is hollow so be careful of over tightening. He had to remove the pump to replace the crush washers on one of the fittings, it was not a difficult job.

I don't think that this fitting is a banjo fitting with a crush washer. It looks like a regular hex nut that is used on copper plumbing that uses a brass compression ring to do the sealing, I may be wrong. I want to be sure of what is in there before I either undo it all the way or try to just tighten.

Re: Perkins engine

Actually you may find that your Perkins has a little rubber grommet insert that goes in to the aperture on the fuel pump first, the fuel pipe is then pushed in through the centre of this grommet and the olive on the fuel pipe sits snugly against it, then the hex nut is tightened, don't over tighten the hex nut, just sufficient to stop the leak. You may have trouble getting the old rubber grommet out, it's fiddly. (I use a pair of stainless steel tweezers).
Brilliant engine, virtually bomb proof if serviced correctly.

This is a pic of a banjo fitting, perkins use these on the IP, fuel filters & injectors. If it's not this type I'am not sure what it may have, before you try to tighten it loosen & the snug it up.
