no water comming out, the heat exchanger pipes are one is hot the other cold, but no water being thrown out any ideas, i think the water pump anybody got any other info or advice . Thanks .

Corroded or otherwise clogged heat exchanger. Thru hull or sea strainer clogged.

thanks guys but i have the sme opinion the heatchanger the motor is 30 years old and not really been used much, the problem started last year, a little water but now none at all, it is certain a good idea to change it. my opinion.
as far as i know the impeller sits behind or attatched to the water pump or not ?

take the hose clamp off the heat exchanger and see if water is going in.

PS impeller IS water pump they are made of rubber and get old and inefffective

thanks that sounds the best way, i have felt the pipes, one is cold stays cold and the other hot gets hotter but didn't think to take the clamp of a bit hot again here today, and getting older. yes and i thought that the impeller is combined as the water pump only by outboards is a bit diferent.

their pretty simple to change out, flatt head screws on the front plate of the raw water pump are removed,
if any fins are missing it must be replaced,
if its over five years old it ought to be,
put a screwdriver on each side of the hub and push down on the handles to pry it out.
If quite a few fins are missing take the hose off the heat exchanger and feel around in there.
nows a ggod time to check the strainr at the intake too

How long has it been like that.

Swap out the impeller.....make sure you seek and find any missing pieces.....On older engines it is not unusual to come up with more pieces due to previous owners not checking downstream from the pump. It is also a good idea to chech all hoses up/downstream for blockage.

If the boat is in salt water disconnect the hose from the exhaust elbow and start the engine.....you may have a blocked exhaust elbow.

thanks for your replies and help very sensible replies , being a master mechanic i know a bit, so now i can set a bit more together and find the problem, the motor runs perfect, the switch of solinoid was stuck and of course didnt want to stop once started, so you can imagine how thing where. he was looking maybe for a new engine i said not need a diesel will last for years if looked after, but it needs cooling. thanks again, be back with the next problem ?

Fred, and all of you great guys..........
Engine now working with lots of lovely water coming out from where it should be.
Turned out to be the box on the gearbox which was badly corroded and blocked
by salt deposits.
Inlet pipe to the gearbox was removed and seawater was seen, reconnected and
exhaust pipe disconnected - no water......arg......
Box and hoses replaced, impeller replaced, heat exchanger cleaned, now everything working fine.
Full service due next week and then I get to sail her for the first time.....whoopeeeee...
