Perkins 4108 engine/trans controls

Hello all,

Ive searched the internet a bit with no luck, though to be honest I have not physically looked too much into it (have only been on the boat 3 times). The problem is when you shift gears, the throttle moves with it. Ex: going from R or N, to F the RPM's jump up, way up, and vice versa, then going fromF or N, to R the RPM's dive way too low.
This makes for some great docking experiences in a 41' Morgan! It does not help that the controls are at your feet, and need 2 hands to work either control.


Can I take them apart and lube it (oil or grease)? Individually they move smooth, when you hold one or another while moving the other. Again its a 4108, in a Morgan 41 CB if it matters. Thanks!

Actually what matters is the type of control.

I'd bet its a teleflex, long and short handles, one with a red ball one with black? There should be drag adjustments on the backside.

Ah, sorry , I'm pretty new to the marine side of mechanics. It it's a long and short style. Short is throttle, long is gear. Two black knobs I believe.

Looks to be the Teleflex MJB. I will have to be on the boat to be sure. Believe it or not, that was a lot of help just identifying it, thanks! Now, hopefully some oil and some use will free it up. If not, apart it goes.

There should be some lubricated nylon bushings between the pivots of the 2 levers. These wear out after time and the result is that one lever drags the other causing the problem that you have. Once you have the parts (which are usually hard to find), it is a simple job to rebuild the control.

I suggest you hire a competent boat engine technician, have him fix the problem while you watch. Maybe it just needs lubrication.

This is a very serious problem that could result in injury or damage to other boats.
