Perkins 4.236 Thermostat Location

I'm having trouble locating the thermostat on my Perkins 4.236. Based on engine number (LD20663J177707P), it is a 2007 engine manufactured in Japan. But when previously ordering a part from TAD (neck for coolant tank cap), they told me that I had the "North American front-mounted" coolant tank (?) or something to that effect.

I have the January 1993 Workshop Manual, the 1998 User's Handbook, and the June 1972 Handbook (all printed from PDFs found online). But for whatever reason, I don't find the descriptions to be much help on this question.

I'm typically fairly handy working with engines, but for some reason, I'm confused about where the thermostat is located. E.g., in relation to the coolant tank, freshwater pump, etc. The best locations that I can identify from the manuals seem very tight, such that it looks like I'd have to remove the coolant tank to change the thermostat, which doesn't seem right.

(I've replaced the water pump">raw water pump and am trying to do other maintenance that makes sense while the engine is drained.)

I'd greatly appreciate any insight, tips, etc. I searched all of the 4.236 threads on the forum and didn't see this issue discussed (which makes me think I'm missing something obvious). Thanks.

What did you figure out? I've run into the same problem. I just replaced the heat exchanger and still redlining the temp. So, must be the thermostat right? Well, how the heck do I get to it?

Thanks!

Re: Perkins 4.236 Thermostat Location

I have a Perkins 4.236M lowline, Engine No LD 14420 U 868123 J.

If your engine is the same as mine, to locate the thermostat you first have to remove the reservoir (see first picture) then you will find the thermostat, (see second picture), when you are putting it all back together make sure you put this bolt in position BEFORE you tighten all the other ones (see third picture)

Have you checked the reservoir cap as these can fail and cause overheating as well

My engine runs between 82 and 88 degrees C

Hope this helps, Good luck
