Perkins 4.236 oil cooler problems

A nice summer up to one terrible day, I will post the full story when I feel mentally strong.
The end of it was an Engine that consumed motor oil faster than diesel and let it all come out in the water together with the exhausts.

My current theory is the oil cooler as that seems to be the one place where sea water and oil meet. Removing it supported the theory as there was that terrible White stuff you get by mixing oil and water in the hose where there only should be water.
If anybody has any other possible causes please tell me!!!

It is that Serck type of Oil Cooler. I have removed it and cleaned it and there is nothing obviously broken.
So my first question is how to best test if it is broken?
(My second would be where to get spares if it is broken. Not even Mr. Google has been of any help there )

Appreciate any comments!

To test your oil cooler, you can use water pressure on one side and look for water running out the other side. Or use air and a gauge and see if the pressure holds.
There are places that repair heat exchangers. Usually larger ones, but they could probably test yours. Also look for after market heat exchangers. Many marine stores sell them. Repair labor might cost as much as a replacement.
The Perkins Parts and Engines Superstore sells oil coolers.
Ebay is one place to look for parts and replacements.

You could also try Trans Atlantic Diesel.

That tube stack must come out of there. Then the truth will be known.

Re: Perkins 4.236 oil cooler problems

Thx a lot for the links and the advices!

The oil cooler is 100% detached from the Engine and the tube stack has been completly out. Just by Visual inspection it looked fine.
I did put it all together again yesterday for future tests.

As I see it there are three possible causes:
1. The tube stack is broken - but it looks ok
2. The O rings are worn out - but they look ok
3. The only bad thing I've found is that the tube stack "edge" prior to the O ring is a Little damaged/corroded

I will tear it apart again tomorrow to measure the tube stack prior to asking it they are possible to obtain. I will share a photo of the damaged part.
Taking friday of to conduct some sort of test using air while holding it in a bucket of water.

As a desperate act I actually bought a new Bowman oil cooler dimmensioned for 4.236 when I bought some other stuff.
But getting it in Place would require a massive rebuild.
I will give eBay another try, so far I haven't found the magic Word that gives the right result. I find oil coolers for the 400 series but they are different.

Back tomorrow with some pictures

Look for an old world craftsman radiator repair shop i your location. Then it to them and have them clean it, rebuild it, test it and paint it. Then you will know that it will last a while.

Wish that I could find one
Living in Sweden and it seems that craftmanship has vanished.

Sorry to hear that. There is only one in my city too. They can do a full rebuild.

So the oil in the engine pan is not white like that? or... how do you know it's the cooler that's the problem?

That is part of the problem - I do not know that

If I understand it correctly that is the only Place where seawater and oil meet. And a "good" way for my Engine oil to sneak out!

Initially I saw no trace of white in the Engine oil but now it is all White. My theory is that as long as the Engine is running the oil pressure is higher so the oil push out. When I turn of the Engine and the pressure falls the water goes in.
And when I opened the oil cooler ther was White oil where it only should be seawater.

I welcome any theory! It is not the cylinder head gasket - I have had the cylinder head removed and it looked fine.

Here are the pictures of the little damage on the tube stack (to the left). It seems to be over the o-ring and should only be in water. But maybe....
Might be easier to fix than the tubestack itself

Re: Perkins 4.236 oil cooler problems

It looks OK, but you must pressure test it to be sure.

Part number for the oil cooler tube stack is:
24865275

New ones can be had, but will be outrageously expensive:

24865275 - VARIOUS COOLING Perkins - 24865039 - 2486442

Cheers,
JM.

Re: Perkins 4.236 oil cooler problems

Dont know if this applies to a 4-236 because I have a 4-108. I also have the factory shop manual.

In the shop manual it specifically addresses the oil cooler and states that the oil cooler has been found to be unnecessary except in cases where the engine is used in severe service. If someone has that manual the paragraph is near page 46. Because of that I have always felt that, if it failed, I would simply run the oil line around it.
