Hi a64pilot,

here in the UK "silencer" only refers to a part of an exhaust system, intake side is known as "air filter housing."

An open exhaust manifold on a runaway could be a roaring three-foot blow torch - we don't want some poor Englishperson having to fight that with only an American-to-English dictionary do we?

Your right I started to say air filter but most boats don't really have an air filter but some have a device whose job it is to quieten the intake noise here usually called a silencer or resonator. It is well known us Yanks don't know the proper names of vehicle parts.

*Pull the head, have it inspected and valves ground if necessary while it's off. This is not hard, you can likely have it off in an hour.
*Wipe the cylinder walls clean with light oil by slowly turning the engine over so they can be cleaned completely. see if they are rusty at all or just light surface stuff.
*Clean all the rocker components etc.
*Completely drain the pan, using the drain plug for the last little bit if necessary.
*If everything looks good replace the head and put all back together properly.
*Replace the oil, and filter, cheap is OK. Try to run the engine, if you can.. run it an hour or more making sure it gets up to temperature for a while.
*Replace the oil again.
*Test run under load etc.
* If oil looks clean it's ok, if it looks dirty or slightly milky, change oil again.
I should amend this:
The first time you run it, run it for maybe 5 minutes or so, then check the oil, if it's milky, don't run it long and change out the oil.

I'd change it pretty soon regardless and use any cheap oil as it won't be there long.
Reason I'd change it soon is 99%!of the rust and garbage will come off really quick and rust is abrasive and you want it gone. When I overhaul an aircraft engine I run it only for 10 min or so then dump the oil as most break in occurs very soon, yes it may take up to 50 hours to fully seat the rings most but most metal is worn off quickly
