perkins 4.108; broken flared tube with fittings

hi i had a 1/4 inch OD steel tube about 4 inches long break.
The tube goes from the coolant reservoir to exhaust manifold.

I've heard many people just remove the tube completely and cap both ends.
or get hose barb fittings and replace with hose.

Does anyone know what this tube is designed for?
should it be steel or copper?
what flair angle?
and what the best repair would be?
and do i need to bleed air out when replacing?

Use cooper and add a loop, it broke from flexing. Keep an eye on it though.
All flare tools make the same angle, so not and issue. No need to bleed air.

The tube is let any air or steam have a path to the reservoir and to maintain a small water flow on a cold engine when the thermostat is closed.

with the tube off i started engine and there was no water coming out either end.
could this be a problem?

That depends if there was coolant in the system, to the level it should be.
May need to poke in there to see if it's clogged.
You can cheaply buy a tube flaring setup at most hardware stores.

How to I know proper level to fill coolant?

Not all flares are the same. hyraulic fittings are typically 37 degrees (known as Parker fittings) others are 45 degree. Some use a double flare. Most likely this is a 45 measure with something square. If the 90 is in the center of the tube and the flare sides are flat against the walls then you have a 45. If not you have a 37.

Simple 45flare on those Perkins, propane fittings, flaring tool and bender if you need it.
Coolant tank level is within 1 in. Of the top of the coolant tank.
As you fill the tank the coolant will flow out of the tube if not connected.
No "bleeding" of air is nessessary.
