I have a 1985 Perkins 4.236 and when I shut it off it looses coolant. I can smell it, I can see it in the bilge but I can not see from where it is coming????
I have checked the filler res, the rad cap, the main hoses I can see, the oil looks ok on the dip stick, it idles fine seems to run fine is not overheating?????

Wher do I begin?

Put some white oil absorbent pads under the engine and see where the drips are coming down, and trace them back. Could be coming from the water pump on the front upper side of the engine. Mine is leaking a bit and I have to take it off to see what is wrong.

Fresh water pump in front, wipe your fingers there , heat exchanger, the hose with the hoses clamps in the small piece of hose who conect the header tank with the fresh water pump, the termostat , if you have the original exaust manifold check there because is cooled by coolant to.

It helps if your engine and bilge are as clean as you can get them. Then check the condition of your hoses. They should be firm but not spongy soft and they should not be stiff and cracked. If they are overly soft or dry and cracking then replace your hoses. Also check the condition of your hose clamps and replace any that are corroded or rusty.

Then follow advice given in previous posts.

In the base of the header tank cap there is a small hose to allow for expansion coolant run to a small plastic tank and when cold coolant back to header tank i guess, do you see any leak there?

I recently had a small leak between a hose fitting and the exhaust manifold. New gaskets and sealant did not fix the leak. When I replaced the radiator cap the leak stopped. Apparently the cap was not releasing the pressure. Something cheap that you can try.

OK found the drip leak behind the fresh water pump,,, so now my question is how hard is this to fix it looks like a gasket may be leaking AND do I have to fix it now ie will it cause problems if I keep the coolant full, and can I wait till I have a marina with some help or do I just pull it apart and use gasket sealant as I will not have this gasket

Loose the belt at the alternator and pump, grab the pulley at water pump and shake it , do you feel play?? if yes the pump is toasted, if you dismatle the bolts holding the pump the coolant is gone, so i sugest you to get a new gasket , new coolant and do it right, you can drain the coolant at the 2 drain pet fittings at the engine block , be aware that 4236 hold a lot of coolant, , after that you just deal with bolts and gasket pump. I found the drip leak behind the fresh water pump,,, so now my question is how hard is this to fix?
It is in front of the gasket by the looks of things,,,
AND do I have to fix it now ie will it cause problems if I keep the coolant full, and can I wait till I have a marina with some help or do I just pull it apart and use gasket sealant as I will not have this gasket and see what it is maybe a crack?

I suspect you will find that the seal and bearing for the pump are gone and the coolant is dripping out of the hole behind the pulley. This usually indicates replace or rebuild time. These pumps are easy to rebuild, the bearings and seals are available at good bearing supply stores. You will need a puller.

OK a few questions, where are the drain pet fittings? As this is in a boat and is hard to see and not much room.
I am in a small village in Panama getting a gasket will not be easy.
If there is no play in the pump and the engine is not over heating can I run it for a trip to a city or will it cause damage?
