Pearson 390 engine refit

Help please.
I have purchased a Pearson 390. I hope to make it a great live-aboard/Cruiser.

The boat has a Pearson 4108 with a Velvet Drive transmission. The problem is it is 5 to 6 inches higher than the drive shaft!!! The previous owner had lots of money and a few sailboats. He re powered a sailboat in California then shipped the engine from it to this boat. After placing the motor in the rails and realizing this was going to be an issue. Well silly me bought his headache. There is a 4x4 that is 3" high in the fwd and 2" high in the aft. So I believe I will still need 3" somewhere???

I am thinking that a Hurth transmission looks like the way to go as it drops the output shaft around 5 inches. I have lots of pictures,

Please tell me what engine / transmission you have in your 390. I like 4108's.

Thank you for you help. And insults, observations.

Re: Pearson 390 engine refit

Sailboatdata.com suggests the 4-108 was standard equipment, likely with a different gearbox. Just looking at sketches of the 390, a center cockpit model, it looks like there might be room to drop the engine lower. The best solution if you want to keep the Velvet Drive is to rework the engine beds if possible to lower the engine to the shaft. Finding the original model tranny might be a lot less work.
