If the engine is running fine at idle and can rev to a specified rpm and then all of a sudden loose power"lay down a white cloud of smoke" it went lean. If it was rich it would lay down a cloud of black sooty smoke.I dont know what the slick on the water would be? but I have had 2 gm diesel v8 engines in my shop that both had that problem and they were lean conditions caused by an in jector pump and the other by a plugged filter.

Check the exhaust elbow? What was the reason for the pump rebuild?

The chart that has been posted appears to be for a high pressure common rail engine. I am sure the engine in question is mechanically fuel injected. Although the chart has many things in common I am sure there will be differences between a low pressure mechanical injected engine and a high pressure common rail engine. I stick with my diagnois and would be interested to find out what fixes the problem.

Maybe so, but the symptoms are basically the same. In the chart the items missing are IP timing and elbow/exhaust restrictions. The chart came form the automotive industry.
I'm interested in the outcome myself.

Against the possibility it might be helpful, attached (I Hope) is the Fault Table for the Perkins 4-108 from my Shop Manual.
