Outboards and Big Boats...

Does anyone have any experience or know of others that have used outboard power on larger displacement (say 10000 to 12000 lb.) cruising boats??

We lost an Atomic 4 a few years back while cruising our Morgan 34. It was just quicker and cheaper to get an outboard and keep going. We bought a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke and a bracket and took off for the Bahamas 4 days later. The OB was on the boat from 2001 until 2004. Had some minor problems, fuel pump needed replacing about every 8 months, but mostly it was fine.

Curious how well the boat performed? I assume that you guys were able to power at or close to hull speed..............?? I am considering adding a well for an outboard. And I am trying to get and idea of how other boats have performed along with any other opinions from those that have had similar arrangements.
