Sell it and buy some oars. How often do you have to go through locks or upriver?

The hull is 19 but the LOA is 24 as it is titled on the brochure. The 3000 lbs was to make myself feel better about buying an over sized engine.

That is so funny, I just opened my computer to google sculling gear. Where does one find the makings for such a rig?

I think ones slave, Spartiarse, comes with his own. You just need a drum.

I already have a Slavelette. She has her own Doof-Doof music which she plays just loudly enough so she can't hear me. I don't think she could row to save her life....

Sooooo now I am back on the market for a smaller motor, would a 4hp be too small? Keep in mind I am trying to cruise this boat and would like to be able to motor-sail or at least motor to weather with a bit of chop.

I like 6HP.

A 2 stroke 6 is light and powerful. They 'seem' to be the perfect OB.

I'd go for redundancy, in fact I have. Solar and a Honda 1000EU generator. You can also down grade your requirements with LED nav lights. I'll second the prop size suggestion and recommend you use what ya got. I have 100watts of solar which produces just under 6amps and figuring 6hrs that's about 35ah. Add a little motoring and make up the differance with the Honda. You might rethink the watermaker if you run out of power. Don't forget to properly size your battery bank, you only get about 35% of total capacity as usable capacity( with lead/acid). Good luck, Dave

The water maker thing was a joke. Our cruising needs are pretty small. I have LED interior and anchor lights, I still have incandescent nav lights but don't plan on sailing at night much. Other than that my power needs consist of a hand held VHF, an automatic bilge pump and a laptop that we will very occasionally check our charts against.

There are a couple of used 4 and 6hp Mercury 4 strokes in my area that can be had for a reasonable reasonable price. I talked to Mercury and they said they have 6amp alternator that you can install yourself for $50. I want to sail this boat and not motor it so I am really looking to loose the lbs. off of the stern.

Anyone on the market for a Yamaha F9.9MLHY?

Make certain you get a regulated output alternator, and not metrely an unregulated lighting power supply.

I used to teach sailing on J-24's which also weigh around 3000 pounds without crew. We used 9.9's on these boats and they certainly did not feel overpowered, especially when the 25-35 knot afternoon winds whipped up.

9.9 outboards also exist because on many lakes, 10 horsepower and up motors are banned.

Did you use a 9.9 2 stroke or 4?

The way that I know that my engine is too heavy for my boat is that I almost died today carrying it to the car. Literally, twice.
