We've got two 3HM35Fs on the
catamaran. Amidst myriad other old
boat projects, I've been working my way through the diesels. I'm pretty familiar with
engine mechanics for gasoline powered four and two strokes, etc. just new at working on diesels. I've managed to improve several of the operating parameters by paying attention to gaskets, valves, washers etc. I've now disassembled, cleaned up, reassembled and re-installed the three injectors from the
engine that was misbehaving the most. Problems were loss of
power, smoke, etc. That's not what my question is about.
I noticed that the cases or housings or whatever the main part of the injector bodies are called all have
single digit numbers cast into the body. I noticed it because the circular opening, or gap around the injector nozzle looks a little different on one injector compared to the other two, which are identical. Looking closer I see that the two identical injectors have a 0 (zero) cast into the injector body, and the odd one has a "5". I checked the other engine, and it has two 5's and a 0. So obviously at some point someone must have swapped those two injectors from one side of the
boat to the other.
Now, my obvious question. is there any significance to those cast numbers, and should it matter at all if they get intermingled?
I tried emailing the question about the castings to Toad, the local
Yanmar dealer, and a couple other places. All I got back in return was a diagram of an injector in case I wanted to order
parts. No info on the question.
