Old diesel volvo engine

Well.. I was checking today a bluewater boat with a old volvo.
Nobody run that engine at least for 10 years.. seems in ok condiion, no rust or water..
What could be the first step?? Change oil and tried to fire up?
I cannot find even information about the model, it's a four cylinder with four air filter in a side, one for each cylinder..
Suggestion?? Overhaul the engine is kind of impossible, just remove it could be a nightmare..

How about hiring a certified Volvo mechanic to check it out?

...no $$$$ and nonsense... it's not my boat and it's just a rhetorical question...
Besides.. a certified technician cost around $150/hs...

Fine. Rhetorically try to start it and see what happens. You might do more than $150 worth of damage, you might not. At least the mechanic would be able to tell you the model.

Try to determine the model. It may be MD21

Before you try to start it:
Remove valve cover, operate decompression lever, roll crankshaft by hand,& verify valves are all operating,& there is no mechanical binding.

That's a three cylinder engine...

I do have manuals for the MD3B if you think you need them.

Re: Old diesel volvo engine

One of the easiest engines to resurrect. (All the MD1, 2 and 3 family).
Heads and barrels can be individually removed to decoke, fit new rings etc without having to split the bottom half of the engine.
My old MD2 did 25 years in a yacht and is now on its 5th year in a local lobster boat.
