Oil leak in Bukh

I have an oil leak coming from behind the fly wheel on my Bukh DV10M single cylinder diesel. Has anybody attempted to replace what I believe is a seal behind it. Possibly the main crank seal? It has slowly been getting worse over the last couple of months so that it leaks about 200ml or so every 5 hours. Also, any idea where I might find a service repair book

That's a lot of oil for a little engine.
I imagine the problem will be the crankshaft seal. I haven't had one of these apart, but it should be straight forward. The flywheel will need to be removed. The hardest part will be getting the ring of bolts lose. The flywheel should come away easily and expose the front seal. It should be a matter of a screwdriver in behind it and flick it out. Check not too much of a groove has been cut in the shaft(should be fine) and fit the new seal. Make sure you torque the flywheel bolts up.
I can't find any manual, I have only seen basic owners manuals on line and in Dutch. Although all the relevant numbers make sense.

yep as alan has stated - this is a fairly easy job and I've done it years ago on my first yacht. Be aware that parts for these baby's are VERY expensive here in NZ. Maybe if it's serious it would be cheaper to look at alturnative powering arrangements.

Thanks for that Alan. Have replaced seals before on my four wheel drive so sounds straight forward although as I am finding out, anything to do with marine is not always straight forward and usually 3 times the price. Fun learning though.

At least you dont have to squeeze through the locker to get to the flywheel

Your darn right them being expensive parts Southernman. What a rip off. Poor Marauder has spent a kings ransom on the thing. And after handing over his right arm, left leg and first born, he found the engine was no good and has now had to buy a new one.

What a nightmare that all turned out to be. Things just went from bad to worse. After two months, $2,000 spent on the bottom end (parts only, no labour), the day before we were supposed to sail away with friends, I am told that the head is stuffed and irreparable. Another $2,500, I think not. Some really bad professional negligence and a trip to the court rooms coming up is where that part is heading. I have now bitten the bullet and have a new Yanmar 15hp about to be bolted in. It was only supposed to be an oil leak I thought! What a waste of some fantastic weather and Christmas at home rather than with friends on the boat!

Yeah you missed a great time Andy. And we had plenty of room in the Dinghy for you and Nicky. Would have been more than happy to drape a Tarp over the top to keep you two dry.

I was wondering how we were going to fit him and Nicky in the anchor locker. Apparently they had a great Christmas BBQ at the Upper Hutt River BBQ though. Andy pumped his dingy up and when they closed there eyes they say they would swear it felt like Resolution Bay

Funny haha. If you just find the right place on the river IT IS just like Resolution! Don't ruin my memories. See you on the water very soon.
