What was the repair to the original starting problem? I leave my thruhull valves open except when I winterize or working on the cooling system, I liveaboard most of the year. One thing I make a habit of is always to check water flow from the exhaust when I start each main and the generator. I had a impeller go bad on the gen and as soon as it started I knew there was a problem because the noise of the exhaust was a little louder because of the reduced flow. Once you become familiar with your boat you'll find that you will realize there is a problem much sooner most likely before a failure that can leave you stranded.

The starting issue was ultimately the fuel lift pump. I had originally deemed it as operational as I could hear it clicking on and saw fuel flow into filter. Of course, I was mistaken but glad that was the extent of it.
It actually was the lack of water splashing out that gave me the pit in my stomach as I looked down at the temp gauge then almost knocking my wife overboard to get to the companionway. Like you said familiarity and routine are key.

"You got this man"....
Slowly but sureley you'll become more competent and confident with the more you accomplish on your own... Like a giant puzzle, certain sections (systems) become clearer when you've got some corner and side pieces in...
Oh... and you will still make the occasional stupid mistake just like all of us...

So I opened the HX and only found one little piece of impeller wedged in one of the copper tubes. Removed the piece and back flushed with fresh water and reassembled. Cranked her up and held my breath as she warmed up. Happy to say water flowed from the exhaust and cooling properly! Thanks again, everyone, for the help!

How many vanes were missing off your impeller? My system the water is pushed from the pump to the transmission cooler then thru the heat exchanger and out the exhaust. Pieces of a trashed impeller can get caught in either cooler. If you do not have a transmission cooler you shouldn't have any other missing pieces in your system. Good luck

It goes straight from pump to heat exchanger then into exhaust. No raw water goes to cooling box on transmission.
Finally going sailing on Saturday. And keys are hanging from the thru hull handle as a reminder!

I installed a filter in the output hose of my RW pump to HX. Bit of overkill,but my Volvo 2003 HX is bugger to to work on. Happy sailing! / Len

nola sailor i'll be in new orleans on monday dropping off "LostCajun" if you haven't found problem by then give me a call 775-750-2964 duane i can come by and at the least have a "BS" section or maybe fix problem cause being new to area we'll also need advice on places to sail or avoid in the area ,,,thanks

Since you have now "been intimate" with the heat exchanger, did you at least buy her some new zincs?
Some say they are not needed. But IMHO, if the engineer who designed it made provisions for them, they are needed.

Congratulations!
There are a couple of areas you really don't want to mess with until you are very experienced with your engine. Fuel injector pump removal, repair and reinstallation is one and testing injector spray is the other. Other than that you can mess around as much as you want but if it runs and keeps cool enough I wouldn't be "fixin" it.

I appreciate it but seems to now be resolved. I actually just moved to Baton Rouge, which is about 70 miles west (but we keep the boat in New Orleans) so I'm really only around on weekends. But if you have any questions about the area please don't hesitate to ask!
