New Isuzu

I have decided to replace my older diesel with an Isuzu 4le 54 hp diesel. Since I am now retired and liveaboard and cruise the BC coast the year round, the dealer advised a strong gear. The downside of this gear according to this fellow is that he orders it from Italy which takes 4 to 5 months. This is ok by me as next spring installation would be fine. Any comments on this and on the 4LE would be appreciated including installation advice. Perhaps reference to some past posts or even a "book" where buying/installing new has been discussed. My boat is 36' steel displacing 12 tons...shaft is 1.25" normal taper.

Hi Gary, I believe you have made a great choice on the engine. I know of quite a few installed on the BC coast, and one of the Brent Swain boats has a similar Isuzu in it for 15 yrs or more. You could probably connect with Steve of www. Silas Crosby.com . He is in Patagonia right now. I am putting the 85hp Isuzu in my new boat here in Courtenay c/w the zf gear from Klassen diesel. I am surprised it takes so long to get the gear, mine was here in a couple of weeks. Not sure what you need to know to plop the new engine in. If it is similar in size, you need to determine where the engine mounts are in relation to the old ones, then build up or drop down to facilitate lining up the shaft. good luck
