New Engine High Pitch Noise?

New engine, prop, shaft, and dripless seal. I've noticed a high pitch noise when in gear. Is that from the dripless seal? Only have about thirty hours on it. Will it go away? Or is it something else?

Thanks

New tranny also? It could be helical gears settling in.

Or even alternator, but don't think it's the seal

Re: New Engine High Pitch Noise?

I just last week helped a friend deliver his new trawler down the TennTom to the Gulf. He described hearing the same sound when he first launched, which turned out to be "prop sing". He took the prop to a prop shop where they eve so slightly adjusted/ ground/ file the tips of the prop and, presto! problem solved.

From the replies you can see there are several possible sources for your noise. Get someone that knows on the boat and make sure you're not damaging something expensive. An hour of a qualified mechanic's time is cheaper than repairs and helps your piece of mind.

Re: New Engine High Pitch Noise?

What Gear do you have ? My PRM 120 behind a 38 hp Beta howls for about 1/2 an hour until it warms up. Then is just fine.

I helped deliver a power boat down the east coast this summer that also had "singing props"

Lets have some more detail ...

Thanks for the responses. The engine is a Beta 38 and I believe it may be the same gear. Don't recall for sure. Not on the boat right now, waiting to get stitches after cutting my hand on a barnacle picking up a mooring.

Our new prop sang for several months until we wore the new off of it.

Hope you're feeling better.

Have you considered the dripless seal? What kind? Does it have a bellows? Does the bellows need to be burped?

Sorry you got cut. Keep an eye on it, they filter a lot of **** out of the water, literally.

You could check around using a stethoscope. If you are not a doctor and don't have one a long socket extension or any suitable rod will do. Put it in different places and on the bone behind your ear and you should locate the source. Don't get caught up in fan belts etc!
Normally problems don't go away.

Re: New Engine High Pitch Noise?

PSS shaft makes high pitched whining/hissing sound when dry. Do not ask me how I learned.

Check PSS for for water flow.

A new cutlass bearing can make high pitched sound too - it is less obvious but quite audible and tends to be less obvious or absent at low speeds. This one goes away as the bearing breaks in.

Maybe other reasons too.

Re: New Engine High Pitch Noise?

Dripless seal is a PSS, has water. New cutlass bearing and the prop is a FOF. The gearbox is a Twin Disk TCM 60.

I noticed yesterday after an hour or so the noise seemed to go away. However, after about eight hours of running, when we were picking up our mooring, I couldn't get it to drop into reverse, which was a bit disturbing whereas it has always shifted smoothly, so I wonder if the gearbox is the source and or problem. Today it shifts forward and reverse normally.

I notice a Study hall for gearboxes thread so will have to do some reading to learn more but in the meantime, as always, any feedback is appreciated. I'll also try to give Beta a call to see what they have to say and let you know.
