I repowered a year ago with a Volvo D1 20. Nice motor - can operate at significant heel angle -is quiet and powerful. The Volvo guy who installed it services it.
Only have 150 hours so far.

The Yanmar exhaust size was a major problem and I heard alot of nonsense from the distributors trying to justify it, but we managed to accomodate it in the installation.

We are undecided whether to replace a 1984 Mercedes Sol engine on our 38' Swanson, with a Yanmar 56Hp or a Volvo 55HP.

We were told the Yanmar definitely is a reconfiguration of a Perkins, maybe less the problems.

We were also told Yanmar beats Volvo as to public perception.

Does anybody know if there are more solid grounds why to prefer the Yanmar over the Volvo?

Thank you!

I haven't re powered but I had a friend who has (2x I think) and the last one was a 55hp Volvo. The OEM engine was Volvo and I don't know the second. They are very happy with the Volvo. I've helped deliver the boat and it's very quiet and reliable (but it was pretty new too).

Some considerations are what's involved with new mounts, prop rotation and configuration and so forth. Volvo parts seem to be very pricey. I have one which is 23 yrs old and runs beautifully.

Yanmars seem to be very popular, but look at some of the exhaust related issues.

Why don't you get quotes from several mechanics and hopefully ones who know both engines???

Replacing Universal M50 44HP

I may be looking at repowering this spring and in considering my options I've found the Nanni/kubota 40 HP to be almost 2000 USD less than the Westerbeke 44B. I'd like to find someone with some experience with the Nanni.
