New 13.4HP Yanmar Engines?

I just came across an add for Yanmar engines at an unbelievable price. NO---- I HAVE ZERO INTEREST in selling/marketing ANYTHING other than to share what I saw.

Moderator--- if you believe this post crosses the no-go boundaries, please delete it.

I purchased some electrical components... relays and stuff from an on line company called Surplus Center (surpluscenter.com) and the material arrived along with one of their catalogs. There are a couple of things others might have an interest in such as two diesel engines, one is a Yanmar and the other is a Kubota. They ARE NOT marine but I see no reason why they could not be easily converted.

The Yanmar is a model 2TNV70 13.4HP 2 cylinder diesel BRAND NEW for $995.95

The Kubota is a model V2403-M-T-EU4 59HP 4 cylinder diesel for $3995.95.

There is a wealth of stuff in the catalog but that is irrelevant to this post. I just have not seen engines like this at these prices.

Surplus Center is in Lincoln Nebraska. My business is down the street. They are good people, and I just looked at the engine a week ago thinking about a possible upgrade to my 8hp single piston Yanmar. Mine sounds like the tractor on Green Acres. Lol. Works good, but pretty low power.

The yanmar they sell looks like a great engine. I am sure it is a government contract engine that did not end up in a government project afterall. They are an army surplus business.

If you are serious about one of these engines as an upgrade, I can get some photos of them and post here.

My concern would be the mounting issues to your ( and my) transmission. I seriously doubt the engines they have would just bolt right in place of the engine we have now. Life is never that simple.

You mentioned their other STUFF. Pretty cool place. I had a Kabota tractor and the manual steering box went out. The part was the same as the national debt. I went into Surplus Center and got parts for power steering that cost a fraction the cost. Upgrade, and it saved me a bundle.

I'm pretty certain that the Yanmars cannot be converted from air cooled to water.

Thanks for setting me straight, last time I looked they had the little air cooled ones. That is a sweet motor all right! I've heard good things about surplus center as well.

Its bell housing is SAE 6 and I believe most marine transmissions mate up to an SAE 4. However I could be wrong about that and a good machinist could make a conversion plate easy enough.

The zf 45 a has an SAE 3 or 4 housing.

I don't think it would be exactly straight forward converting this engine from a radiator/fan setup to a heat exchanger/raw water intake/impeller setup.
A radiator needs a good source of outside temp air to function properly, which is not likely in most small boat engine compartments that I've seen.
Perhaps somebody has had success using a radiator cooled engine?

Yes, any can be converted. A heat exchanger, of course, is a must unless you go raw water cooled. My Mercedes OM636 was originally designed as an auto engine and then a Thermoking refrigerator engine converted for marine use. Many old Perkins engines were tractor or bus or forklift engines converted to marine use. You can do it but need the add ons to make it marine.
