What is the best way to stop it and get it started later thanks. Jim

Not sure about your specific engine, but you should be able to reach the fuel cable and pull it all the way off. That may shut it off or may just leave you at idle. I have heard you can restrict the air flow with something solid like a flat piece of board. (with the air in let off the engine) DO Not try it with your hand or a rag etc. If the stop switch activates a solenoid, just pull there.

Go to the engine and find the throttle linkage and move it to lower RPM's and then all the way in that direction which should stop the engine. And if that happens your problem is in the stop switch, or the linkage to the throttle.

What is the model #?

You might have a problem with your electric kill switch. Probably just a loose wire to the solenoid.

Have you located the manual kill switch ? That will do just fine while you figure out the electrical problem. If access is difficult tie some string to the manual switch and pull on the string.

Crude but effective.

Cut off the air intake as noted. All of the other suggestions are good and if you are lucky, its one of them. The worst possibility is that the diesel is running on your crankcase oil.

Depends on the model. My old one had a lever near the front. If you pulled it forward, it cut the fuel off manually.

On my new engine (20 hp 3gm, fresh water cooled), there's a button at the back of the engine you push. Check your manual.

My 3GM30 has the kill lever on the lower forward left hand side as you are facing the front of the engine. If you have a cable kill system, have someone pull the cable and see if it is moving the lever of the kill switch. If not, either move it manually as they pull on the kill cable or loosen the cable attachment bolt and use your foot or hand to move it aft IIRC. If that doesn't kill the engine, you are getting combustible material into the engine other than from the injectors and probably have significant wear problems.

If the above doesn't work, take a board or something and put it over the intake to cut the air to the engine. In no circumstances put your hand or any part of your body over the intake while it's running.

Once you release the kill lever, the engine will be ready to run again.

your stop solenoid isn't working, find it and manually pull on the linkage for the fuel dump attached to it (stbd side of engine by the fuel pump), plan on replacing the soleniod, the wiring or the push button as one of these is the problem

if problem is that the stop solenoid isn't energizing, it won't stop you from restarting the engine later

Check your engine panel push button to see if works, if it does check that the solenoid energizes

I've recently replaced both of my engine push buttons and your boat is older than mine

It is very common for the wires behind the red kill button to suffer salt damage. Few boats offer the ignition panel as much water protection as it needs.

My Yanmar red kill button is dead even as I type. Fortunately there is a piece of string strategically placed beneath one of my cockpit seats.
