My universal wont start

My Universal diesel wont start after I have been sailing. Starts like a champ at the slip, but when I have been sailing crickets. Fuel pump is ticking away, I have good batteries, just won't turn over. Is it a bad neutral safety switch?

Have you tried jumping the neutral start switch? Might be a loose wire. Does it make a clicking noise when you try to start? Need more info to diagnose.

Well, it does start at the dock. Disconnect the 120 volt power so you have no battery charger. Turn on things that use 12 volts. Take a long coffee break. Do you still have lights? I am thinking you need new batteries.

Re: My universal wont start

If it doesn't crank - look for a fuse around the starter solenoid - blown, corroded fuse or broken wire at the fuse is most likely responsible.

Adding to this, if you have a Garmin chart-plotter, one of the data options to display is voltage. While not exactly scientific, it will indicate the condition of the batteries.
