I'd like to know where your getting you're info. How can you justify saying the internals of a Yanmar are made by Kubota.

Cat man do : The battery was disconnected and I cannot think of anything that might have been toasted. Sparks were certainly flying though. (Ever tied to catch cutting sparks with an old welding jacket?)
I will ring Diecon and Zenith tomorrow and have a talk to them. I agree that the Yanmar spins a little fast but the proven design and worldwide service should offset this. I would prefer a heavier, slower engine.
A curious comment that I received was that the heavy (2") prop shaft and large prop would contribute to difficult gearchanges on a light gearbox.
Richhh : What was it the Supermodel used to say "I don't get out of bed for less than $100,000" - probably misquoted) A competent marine engineer here can almost name their own price. If you are curious dummy up an immigration application and see how fast it gets approved.

The 3QM block I have looks very much like some Kubota tractor engines in the neighborhood. Dunno since I havent begun to strip and boil the old block I have.
A long time ago I used to be an automotive engineer ... so nothing seems impossible with IC engine.

Yanmar are very much Yanmar. No Kubota. It is possible some small Kubota Tractors had Yanmar engines.
Yes Yanmar are fast revving. In a "play toy" boat, it will still see many years of trouble free life. In a comercial vessel it could be that a big slow reving donk would be best.
No there is nothing on a Diesel, at least older ones, that can be destroyed by welding with battery connected. What can be destroyed is the alterntor charge Diodes. So disconecting Battery is still good practice. I is possible, but I don't really know, that the very latest computer controlled Diesels could have the comp damaged if you welded with the battery connected.
Chris, remember your prop is going to have to change. And you have to be very aware of this. It may not be a simple case of "just another prop". You have to work backwards from Prop to engine, to be able to prescribe what engine power is going to replace your old one. So work out what you can swing under there, and then work out what engine powers will suit, then work out what engine models are available to suit.

I have been offered a totally rebuilt, newly marinised Perkins F2 for $9,500.
Trouble is, I've never heard of a Perkins F2.
I can also get a marinised Isuzu 4JB1 with a PRM box for $14,000 by Zenith Engineering.
Looks to be a more serious engine than the Yanmar.
So, has anyone any experience with a marinised Isuzu 4JB1 ?

Mate, thats why I put you onto them. I'd reckon anything that comercial boys use can't be too bad. Interestingly when i was buying my motors the Yanmar guy agreed that the Isuzu would have better longivity and I think youll find it has more torque, which is why I got those 3-3 litre cummins for my project. They have heaps.

I gave up on expecting the mechanic to arrive.
I brought the SAE spanners and an electronic lift pump from my local truckies shop.
Connected everthing up.
Didn't work.
My cries of rage attracted the attention of the owner of the boat on the next berth, a professional diesel mechanic.
He opened the bleed screw on the injector pump. Many bubbles flowed forth and he explained how the injector pump would not work with air in it.
He cracked one of the nuts on the line to an injector and fuel flowed forth.
The battery died.
On the way home I dropped in on the local battery shop (Power Products of Drummoyne) and paid for a battery to be delivered next morning.
Russell arrived with the battery next morning and installed it on the boat. He even put proper connections on the lift pump and wired everthing up.
He had to go to work so I completed bleeding the injectors.
I sprayed Aerostart into the engine a few times.
After I stopped using the stop lever as a throttle the engine started.
Runs well now.
Now I have the problem that the steering pedestal mounted gearchange/throttle will not select neutral. Any suggestions?

Congrats on getting it working again!

When I can't find neutral its because someone stepped on the bowden tube beside the transmission.

Kinks the cable and give to much friction! Have somebody move the throttle while you watch the cable where ever you can see it.

My bet is on the cable got bumped or kinked during your engine repairs!

I go with Zach on the cable at the mo, till you can give more info. what exactly do you mean that it won't select nuetral. Is it stuck, is it going from fwd to rev without locking in N, or or or. Is it a Morse or similar that N is between Fwd/Rev?

Gee that was some mechanic who jury rigged the fuel pump and scratched his head when it wouldn't work without bleeding it!

When I moved my boat into a differnt berth I took it for a run round the bay.

The engine leaked oil everywhere.

So it's gone to that great spare parts bin in the sky...

Does this mean you are putting in a new engine ? Dont tell me you are going purist and sailing everywhere ? ; ) What have you chosen ? Being the lucky owner of a steel boat did you consider keel cooling ? My engine goes in this week (isuzu 53 hp keel cooled) zf box.

has anyone checked to be sure that the battery got hooked-up correctly? not turning over with the electric starter says: no electricity from the battery to the electric starter. cn
