MD22 White Smoke, Exhaust Elbow Temp

Hopefully someone can help me here - I have a Volvo MD22P with 643hrs on the clock. When motoring there is white smoke, normally light but gets heavier at full throttle.

She doesn't burn any oil, fuel consumption is normal, and have held my hand to the exhaust while the engine was running and it does not appear to smell of anything I distinctive. So I am guessing this is steam from a low raw water cooling flow.

There is a high temperature thermal switch on the exhaust elbow, I have short circuited this to test the warning buzzer and it seems fine. I placed some temperature stickers on the outside of the exhaust housing and found the surface temperature at 60C - is this too hot?

Anything else I should check before removing the exhaust elbow?

many thanks,
Michael

One thing I forgot to include - the engine does not seem to run hot - its normally between 85-90C.

Open to all thoughts & suggestions!

OK not that this has generated any interest - but maybe someone will come across it in the future;

The thermal switch is set to close, activating the over temp alarm at 65C, and only resets (opens) again at 45C. Disassembling the raw water cooling elbow I found some blockage here, have cleaned it out and reassembled it to the exhaust elbow.

Warm at idle and up to 2100rpm, it doesn't seem to go over 35C now, but no idea what the same point was before so I don't no if I have done any good. Waiting on a sea trial to know for sure..

If that doesn't do it i guess the next thing is to disassemble the heat exchanger and clean it.

had exactly same thing with Volvo 2002 powered Genset, cleaned exhaust elbow in Acid, also had collapsing rubber exhaust hose, fixed problem. problem with Volvo heat exchangers is they charge like a wounded bull for their propriety rubber o rings

I guess its that I am at the north end of the panama canal and the Volvo service guy for panama is at the south end! I have never had it apart, just not sure what I will find when I do get it apart and what o-rings, gaskets etc I will need to get it back together..
