Magnesium Pencil Anode

Does anyone know a source for magnesium pencil anodes? I have an aluminum block for my engine and run in fresh water. Zinc anodes will give me absolutely no protection. I need a CME0 size anode to install in my heat exchanger.

I don't understand why it is so hard to find magnesium anodes. The anodes for my saildrive leg are only available in Zinc as well, so I have purchased an ingot of magnesium and I am going to have to machine my own.

Might have to do the same thing for the pencil anode. Would rather purchase the pencil anode though as most pencil anodes have a steel core to prevent them from breaking off and clogging the cooling tubes in the heat exchanger. I guess if I have to, I may be able to drill out the center of the magnesium rod and heat it up to allow a press fit over a steel core.

Re: Magnesium Pencil Anode

Sailmonkey,

Thanks for the link. Looks like they have magnesium pencil anodes, but unfortunately no the E0 size. I guess if worse comes to worse, I could buy the E1 anodes and chuck them up in the lathe and spin them down and re-thread them to fit the E0 plug.

At least it's a source!

Heck with it. I went ahead and ordered an E0 Zinc for the plug and the E1 Magnesium (anode only) and I will just machine it down and be done with it.

Thanks again Sailmonkey!

NEVER HEAT MAGNESIUM

You can buy them at any plumbing supplier, they go inside water heaters.

Re: Magnesium Pencil Anode

Check with boatzincs.com about a sail drive anode.

They do have anodes made of an aluminum alloy for sail drives, and that may be suitable for fresh water. They should know.

I think those would be much bigger than what I am looking for from what I saw on the web.

The only anode listed for the OMC drive is Zinc. I need Magnesium, as the lower unit is made of aluminum. The Zinc would provide no protection as the aluminum will corrode before the zinc does and an aluminum anode would corrode at the same rate as the lower unit it is supposed to protect.

Re: Magnesium Pencil Anode

Sorry, if they don't make an aluminum anode for that sail drive, obviously you don't have that option.

Bob with boat zincs spoke at length with me, and said the aluminum alloy is much better than zinc, but I can't remember what he said for use in fresh water.

Actually that should read 'never melt magnesium unless you know what you are doing'. A magnesium fire is not a good thing !!!
I do not believe that the anodes for water heaters are pure magnesium but don't know for sure. I also believe that the plumbing anodes are only good for higher temperature fresh water. I do not know at what temperature they become effective.
