Looking for USA source of transmission to engine studs

Hi All,

I'm in the process of taking my Velvet Drive (71C) off of a Perkins 4.236. Rather than doing a rebuild myself I think that I will send it up to Harbor Marine in Everett WA.

The nuts that attach the transmission to the bell housing are quite rusted and pitted. Along with the threads of the mounting studs.

In prep to remove the transmission and reduction gear (2.1:1) I have been spraying the nuts with PB Blaster and DeOxit-5 as well as going after them with a wire brush where I can.

I was able to loosen up the 2 upper nuts the other day. Or rather loosen up 1 nut and unscrew the stud on the other.

Which brings me to my first of many questions- Does anyone have a source of direct replacement mounting studs (is the USA)?

The stud that I have out is 3 5/8" long and 7/16" diameter with 5/8" of 7/16-20 threads on each end.

Dorman part number 675-012 are 4" long and could be cut down to match the total length with more than enough threads on each end even when cut down. This stud is grade 8.

Normally when cutting a stud or bolt down I would thread a die on and go after it with a hack saw or other cut off device. Then dress it up on a grinder and pull the die off to re-cut the threads where needed. Too much work for the 6 studs needed....

Regards

Try McMaster Carr. Google fasteners.

Thanks, I've been to all the usual suspects (McM-Carr, Fastenall, Granger) and a bunch of manufacturers sites. Google is My Friend. No luck there....

Any decent machine shop can make them for you.

Just an off the wall thought. Check with an industrial trucking supplier and they may have what you need. Sounds like s brake drum stud might work.

Re: Looking for USA source of transmission to engine studs

Thanks all. As noted thee Dorman part would work if I cut them down. I was looking for an off the shelf part (and part number!) because I was being lazy - Er - more efficient.

Not really too hard to cut them down and dress up the cut end with a grinding wheel and die.

Re: Looking for USA source of transmission to engine studs

I too have a 71C with a Velvet drive (and a Walter V-drive too). I just rebuilt/replaced both. The short studs were purchased at a local hardware store. The long studs were purchased from https://bpi.ebasicpower.com/shop/cru.../stud-crusader All are grade 8. Of course you can always buy from Westerbeke, but their prices are astronomical. Feel fee to contact me off list for more information. I did all of the work myself. It's not hard to do, but it is time consuming. Engine alignment was the longest pole in the tent.

Re: Looking for USA source of transmission to engine studs

When I replaced the lift pump on my 4.236 a corroded stud unscrewed from the block. I cut down an allen cap screw to make a new stud. Easy.

Grainger has 7/16-20 all-thread in 1 foot lengths.

Re: Looking for USA source of transmission to engine studs

Thanks all for the good suggestions. Remember that the Dorman part number 675-012 is a grade 8 stud with the right 7/16-20 fine threads on each end as needed and is 4" long and can be cut down to the right length. And about $4 each.

I'm hoping to source the correct length 3.625" with 7/16-20 on each end.
