Lehman hours

I'm looking at a Marine Trader Trawler that has a Ford Lehman with 4400 hours.
The engine seems to have been maintained well, so how many total engine hours untill some sort of overhaul is needed. And what kind of overhaul. Top end or full redo?
Thanks

Re: Lehman hours

American Diesel Corp
The folks at American Diesel have forgotten more about the Ford Lehman that most ever know. So they would be a good source for engine technical details. They told me that until the engine has 7500hrs on it it's still in the "break in period". Now that I'm sure was a little tongue-n-cheek but I think it also speaks to how long lasting these engines are.

Re: Lehman hours

Marine diesels don't die - they get killed. If it's running good, not filling the crankcase with blowby and cleans up once it warms up then don't worry about it.

Re: Lehman hours

I haven't done a Ford Lehman in a long time... they are light duty engines.

If it's a non-turbo, not abused but cared for, about it's 1/2 way to an overhaul. If it's a turbo model, near overhaul.

Undamaged but compression loss and smoking overhaul is usually new rod and main bearings, cam bearings, sleeves/bore, pistons, rings. Heads in good shape just valve grind and seals, otherwise complete head rebuild. Rebuild turbo, injector pump, other accessories as needed determined by use. Find an online service manual. Maybe worth buying before buying the engine.
