Leaking high pressure injection pump W30

I have a Westerbeke W30 with a chronically leaky high-pressure fuel injection pump. It seems to be coming from the throttle shaft. I've had the throttle housing off twice and replaced the o-rings. The shaft and bore both look normal, no scratches, burrs, grooves etc. Does not leak bad, just an occasional drip, enough to be aggravating.

I have some higher quality O-rings on order. Anyone know any tricks or things I might be overlooking?

Can you put in a cup seal instead? You might take out the shaft and buff it to be sure it's smooth. Also, there are sleeves for shafts made out of teflon (I think) that slide on shafts that become rough or pitted. I've used them on pumps and hydraulic motors but don't know how small they are made.

How could you tell the shaft is good? Bet it ain't.

Remember this is not a high speed spinning shaft that would become scored, etc. Only moves about 15-20 degrees between idle and full throttle. Has a groove for the o-ring rather than sitting directly on the shaft surface. Don't think the groove would accommodate a cup seal.

I did the O ring thing myself too. However it still needed a new shaft at ovhl.

You might consider going online to an O ring supplier and trying to find an O ring slightly larger than the standard one. There is a surprising range of sizes available.

is your engine 36 years old? there isn't much pressure in that area. Lift pump pressure. it could be a crack in the housing and can be fixed with JB weld. cracks can happen from fatigue with age. most governor housings are aluminum so I don't know how you get it checked for cracks, Like they magna-flux heads for cracks. you might just clean it real good and look at it with a magnifying glass.

My w60 is 37 years old and leaked at both the stop and throttle rods. new O rings did the job. as mentioned ware of the housing and or shaft is pretty unlikely.

36 years young.

good thought. I sprayed another coat of paint on it at the first go round, may be wise to strip it down to bare metal.

I also used hardware store O-rings as there were none that fit in the rebuild kit. I will get some quality ones. BTW, they are sized by "dash numbers", typically in 1/16" increments for the smaller ones and do not come in "oversize" like you might get for a piston ring or something. There is an X-section O ring that is supposed to be better, but I cannot locate any this size.

O rings come in many sizes. diameter, and thickness. as long as it's made to handle fuel there isn't much difference in quality, except price. I've replaced many over the years, from hardware sores and auto parts stores and none have failed that I know of. So that means years down the road.

did you get the kit for your housing? you can get a kit just for the governor housing, that comes with O rings gaskets, the spring and other parts. the O rings fit pretty tight. if you get one that slides onto the shaft and into the groove easily then it's almost cretan to leak. they'll fit so tight that you might think it's going to break.

I have recently had a small annoying leak in my Perkins HP pump - 'O' ring.
I had a complete service kit installed, adjustment made etc, by pump / injector specialist.(also serviced injectors).
His comment,' you are lucky, almost all seals and 'O' rings crumbled or broke when removed'.
I am a hands on type person, but I also know my limitations!
This story may not solve your specific problem but may give you something to think about……It comes down to Cost / Benefit.

Looks like a Lucas CAV injection pump with a hydraulic governor
worked on them for 40 years ,nice little pumps
Any fuel leak on the throttle shaft or shut down shaft is caused by a worn
out shaft,worn o-ring or the housing itself.
If the shaft is ok and the o-ring new and still leaking, check the housing
inside were the o-ring sits and you will find the groove worn right into
the material.Sorry,needs a new housing...some part # are still available.

I will check it. I may have a spare housing sitting around. i will also inspect the shaft with a magnifying glass to identify anything missed by my aging eyes.
