Keel cooling for 80hp diesel enginrs

Has any one done keel cooling on main engines instead of sea water cooling via heat exchanger

Yes. On metal boats it is the obvious way to cool them. And there are lots of wood/glass boats with externally mounted keel coolers. They've been a standard item for a long time now. If you're building a sailboat casting pipe into the the lead ballast is an almost free and very efficient way to do keel cooling. Brent Swain's boats use the skeg as a keel cooler.

I had a 40' 1940 Canadian built boat with a 6cyl 80hp Ford Lehmann that was keeled cooled. This was in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Very effective cooling in the cool NW water. Make sure to use heavy walled tubing. There maybe makers still of the 2 end pieces, one that allows the tubes to exit and one the allows the second tube to return to the first piece that exits the engine room. Additional straps are required down the length of the tubes to hold them to the hull.

Thats good,assume this could be used on grp hul?.
Doing repower on motor cruiser and as out and refitting looking at different options.pros\cons between two options.

I can imagine,but against impellor/strainer systems iis the servivce life any advantage for long cruising 2-4 months?Seen pictures of the tubes on keels,anyone used the box type. Any issues with mounting to grp with through hull tempetatures?

Ive seen to many glass racing dinghys melted by the sun And i would hate to hear yours melt :O . Some wood/metal reinforcing in that area and you should have no problem. My father was working on a GRP motor cruiser which has had keel cooling for over 15 years and no problems apart from basic maintanance.

You can build your own or you can buy ready made units. There are at least 2 companies that make them. Do a google search.

Cleaning off growth is not much of an issue. They are made from copper/nickel which is antifouling.

Sizing is done for the hp and the water temperature.
