Kanzaki KM35P - Dipstick without Marks ?

Or should I say not the usual H & L marks that are referenced in the Yanmar manual......not that they give that much info on the gearbox anyway

The only mark (and I've looked very closely) is one circular line at the very bottom of the dipstick.

Is the idea that as long as oil is detected at the tip - everything is OK?

I say oil because the spec = SAE 20 or 30 HD oil

Thanks in advance

Re: Kanzaki KM35P - Dipstick w/o marks?

Is it a flat dipstick? The dipstick on my Kanzaki is a hollow cylinder with a little hole on the side representing optimum oil level...
Stick is not screwed in to measure levels.

And not higher than the line. The line is less than a 1/4" up from the bottom of the stick, correct?

Re: Kanzaki KM35P - Dipstick w/o marks?

No.
mine is also a hollow cylinder too with a circular line etched in toward the very bottom - the only hole(s) are at the very top just before the cap threads

Yeah, I check without screwing in but all the manual references (general) mention the two lines........no comment about lack of two on the 35P

Thanks for reply

c40j - Yes, sounds about right for line location
so the idea is wet below line after drying & ONLY dipping (no screwing)

At what angle of installation? I'd think it would matter.

And the motion of the ocean..........of course

now back to our program = yes, there is angle involved however the dipstick location is about i/2 way along the case.......and since it's "splash" lube they are banking on that level to be sufficient

I'll just make sure it reaches that one & only mark with the right SAE oil
and it w/b fine....fingers always crossed

If you're unsure then drain the oil and refill to confirm or reset the mark. You can do this for the low and high mark. Just make sure you use a method to remark the dipstick line which won't result in the bottom of the dipstick fracturing off.

Too much oil?!!?

Greetings,

I just noticed this thread and read it with great interest.

I have the same gearbox and likewise have a cylindrical dipstick with no h/l markings. Seeing as though more oil is always better than less.. I filled the gearbox to FULL.

I noticed recently however that I'm getting some oil dripping out the bearing/seal where the coupling comes out of the gearbox and it sprays a circular pattern on long runs when the oil gets hot/thin. It's a small amount, but I thought it was the oil seal failing. Maybe it is because I have too much oil in there???

Can somebody confirm how much to fill? Is it as somebody posted above that the dipstick is just barely wet or past the hole or what?

Thanks muchly!

Unfortunately with powertrain components (engine, gearboxes, transmissions, etc) more oil is almost as bad as no oil.

The leaking you are seeing is due to pressure buildup due to the lack of a natural air space. In some cases you will damage seals and cause hydraulic lockup and may find changing speeds becomes more difficult.

The oil also behaves like a liquid rope wrapped around the rotating components which saps power. The more oil the less power is available to turn the prop.

You are amazing, I have exactly all of those symptoms. I was wondering why changing gears has become more difficult recently, and it appears that this is it then!

I have motored approximately 5-6 hours since I added the extra oil. Do you think I have caused permanent damage to the seals?

So first thing tomorrow, I will suck out some of the oil - how much should I leave in there considering the dipstick is unmarked?

Thank you thank you thank you!

Re: Kanzaki KM35P - Dipstick without Marks ?

a.k - here's link(s) to Kanzaki info + on capacity = .5 liter
Kanzaki Kokyukoki MFG .Co.,Ltd.

http://www.kanzaki-kokyukoki.jp/mari...5P/TTMC35P.pdf

lbs - thanks for reply.......I've not changed out oil yet - based on all the comments - the level seems fine......hard to be exact based on location - getting dip stick out - clean oil, etc, etc.......but it looks good, no leaks.
I'll check one last time + I'll be prepared for change per schedule or sooner.

Thanks again to all.........cross this one off the list ....make room for others
