Isuzu 2AB1??? Full of fresh water - salvageable?

Is it an Isuzu 2AB1 and is it salvageable?

I bought an aluminum sailboat, a Trisbal 36, and the engine is in sad shape.

First of all is it an Isuzu 2AB1? Looks to be and I've Isuzu manuals. Satyrus's Engine such as it is!

The boat was flooded with rain water and sank at her berth. The engine was submerged in fresh water (rainwater). When I bough it the cylinders and sump were full of water. The water may have been in the engine for years. I can rotate the crankshaft with a socket wrench through 270 degrees. The valves can be manually moved. I have removed the starter, valve cover and injectors. Non of the bolts or nuts were seized nor did I break any bolts in the process. I removed as much water as I could, sprayed in Blaster, rinsed with methanol and sprayed with Blaster again and added oil.

Questions:
- Is it salvageable (ignoring the starter) ?
- If salvageable? Or am I .
--- do I disassemble enough to get it turning, or do a complete tear down.
--- What parts do you recommend I replace.
--- Is the injector pump useable/salvageable?
- If the engine is not salvageable, what would you recommend as a replacement (Satyrus's Plans and Specifications ):
--- a rebuilt 2Ab1
--- or ????

I tried to upload pictured but the SailNet "Manage Attachments", would not upload even though my jpg. files were less than 95K and less than 800 x 600.

Even though only freshwater, being submerged for so long probably means significant interal corrosion. But who knows until you try it. I would try to get it to rotate 360 degrees before going any further. Might be a frozen valve stem that is blocking the cam at some point.

The injection pump is probably going to need to be rebuilt. Lots of tight clearance parts and even one sitting on a shelf in a high humidity situation can lock up the rack due to corrosion.

At a minimum you will need to rebuild the starter and injection pump. After that a valve job and after that a complete tear down.

Be careful and cut your losses before you get in too deep.

One fellow on here had an engine that would not rotate. When he removed the head he found some carbon on the top of two pistons that stopped the rotation. He rebuilt the engine and it is running well for him.

I would pull the head and see if you can get rotation. Remove all injectors and flush fresh fuel from a container through the injection pump and make sure there is no water left in the injector lines. If the fuel flushes though okay, replace the head (check the cylinders for rust) and starter and see if it will run. Make your decisions from that point.

I'd agree. Yeah, it's salvageable, but you need to tear it all the way down and find out if it's economically feasible. You can rebuild practically any engine if price is no object, but at some point, it's "Why bother", unless you are trying to preserve a Packard 12 or some such engine.

From the description and appearance on your blog the engine will require an extensive rebuild. This is likely to be a significant fraction of the cost of a new engine.
If you go ahead with a rebuild there are still many components that will remain inferior to new parts.

I think it's time to bite the bullet and think about a new engine.

Do you homework well. The more research you can put in at this stage the easier (and cheaper) the conversion will be.

Found brochures saying the 2AB1 is an Isuzu QD-27. Perhaps 2AB1 is the marinised version?

If those pix are indeed your engine, I'd not waste any more time of money on it. Looks like a disaster waiting to eat all your loose change.

Darn !! Ive fixed a lot of WET engines over the years !!Many that were under salt water, and a few that were under fresh water ! And it looks to me it was under for some time ! and then was raised and nothing else was done to it !! I really believe I would pull it and toss it in a corner! it looks like a BIG Money job ! it will need a lot of exterior parts along with ALL Internal parts !! Im sure it would cost more to fix that one then to replace with a good used one !! and even a New one ! just my thoughts with 40+ years of re-bilding diesel engines !

first thing is to get it out of the boat,which is somthing you will have to do regardless of condition.

as it is an industrial engine it might be worth finding out what other applications these engines were used for ie,tractor,generator,cement mixer etc,if it was a common engine you may be able to pick up a cheap running engine,then use the bolt on ancillaries that are less likely to have been damaged,like gearbox,flwheel plate,heat exchanger,jabsco pump etc

otherwise junk it and start again

Your first post started me thinking of all the things I'd try to do to salvage the engine and to see if I could get it running. Then I saw the photo.
I'm a very cheap fellow and I'd opt to find a good used engine.
